Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism buys land to develop sports tourism

COUNTY BEACHES AND ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism closed on 111.26 acres of land in northeast Gulf Shores on June 28, 2022 that Gulf Shores uses | Orange Beach Sports & Events (formerly Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission) for sports and event tourism. The cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and the two city school systems are experiencing population growth, so more residential space is needed to facilitate sports tourism at local sports complexes and school facilities.

The land is located on Coastal Gateway Boulevard between the two cities.

Sports and event tourism remains a key economic driver for these two coastal cities, especially outside the summer season.

“As field use for city school systems and local youth sports increases, there is less room to sustain and grow sports and event tourism,” said Beth Gendler, CMP, CDME, president and CEO of the tourism office. “There is very little real estate left in southern Baldwin County of any size, so we knew we had to buy a large piece of land before it was gone. With the guidance and direction of our board, we were able to find and secure this land to ensure the future of sports tourism on the Gulf Coast.

The site is located west and north of the Auburn University satellite facility on Coastal Gateway Boulevard (County Road 8 East) and the Foley Beach Express. The far north end of the property meets the Foley line and is close to the Orange Beach city limits. The organization’s next step is to acquire a research company that will conduct a feasibility study of sports facilities, which will determine the needs of the community, what should be built and how it will be managed.

The goal of this project is to fill the space gap, increase sports and event tourism, and at the same time increase housing needs. For more information on GSOB Sports & Events, visit the official website here.
